History is replete with learned men and women telling us about the science of health. The majority of them have been snakeoil salesmen but I digress. Let go down the historical path of what America and other country’s have decided is best for you and in such used the idiom of its science. My favorite of all time is eugenics, when I first read about it of course it was due to history teaching about the Nazi’s and Adolph Hitler but Hitler only snagged what Woodrow Wilson and Margaret Sangar had put into practice in America and codified into law by the Supreme Court
One of the worst Supreme Court decisions in history, according to our guest journalist Adam Cohen, was the 1927 decision upholding a state’s right to forcibly sterilize a person considered unfit to procreate – unfit because they were deemed to be mentally deficient. That decision is part of a larger chapter of American history in which the eugenics movement was behind preventing so-called mentally deficient people from procreating through not allowing them to marry, sterilizing them and segregating them in special colonies.
The Nazis borrowed some ideas from American eugenicists. The eugenics movement also influenced the 1924 Immigration Act, which was designed in part to keep out Italians and Eastern European Jews. Adam Cohen’s book titled “Imbeciles” is about the eugenics movement in the early 20th century and the Supreme Court case legalizing sterilization.
SCIENCE they screamed just accept it! It is for the common good (my favorite refrain of the left even in the 21st century). The Common Good
John Harvey Kellogg, of Kellogg cereal fame, organized the Race Betterment Foundation in 1911 and established a “pedigree registry.” The foundation hosted national conferences on eugenics in 1914, 1915 and 1928.
As the concept of eugenics took hold, prominent citizens, scientists and socialists championed the cause and established the Eugenics Record Office. The office tracked families and their genetic traits, claiming most people considered unfit were immigrants, minorities or poor.
The Eugenics Record Office also maintained there was clear evidence that supposed negative family traits were caused by bad genes, not racism, economics or the social views of the time.
Slippery slope that damnable common good is as we’ve all seen.
I’m big on history, when I first watched a show about the Kennedy’s there was a mention of sister Rosemary and I became interested in what had happened to this sister when all the others were so healthy. I’d come to find out that science agreed that lobotomies were appropriate for what is normal behavior for Democrat voters today, screaming and acting out. Rosemary against her will was taken into a hospital and had her frontal lobes of the brain severed. Rosemary’s crime was being mentally ill & lobotomy being the Science Of The Day
The use of lobotomy in the United States was resisted and criticized heavily by American neurosurgeons. However, because Freeman managed to promote the success of the surgery through the media, lobotomy became touted as a miracle procedure, capturing the attention of the public and leading to an overwhelming demand for the operation. In 1945 Freeman streamlined the procedure, replacing it with transorbital lobotomy, in which a picklike instrument was forced through the back of the eye sockets to pierce the thin bone that separates the eye sockets from the frontal lobes. The pick’s point was then inserted into the frontal lobe and used to sever connections in the brain (presumably between the prefrontal cortex and thalamus). In 1946 Freeman performed this procedure for the first time on a patient, who was subdued prior to the operation with electroshock treatment.
Of course history is replete with bad science that was pushed on an unsuspecting public as for the common good. Science is never settled and questioning science is good practice to not ask is to be a guinea pig for hysterical SnakeOil Salesman
While today a “snake oil salesman” is someone who knowingly sells fraudulent goods, the use of snake oil has real, medicinal routes. Extracted from the oil of Chinese water snakes, it likely arrived in the United States in the 1800s, with the influx of Chinese workers toiling on the Transcontinental Railroad. Rich in omega-3 acids, it was used to reduce inflammation and treat arthritis and bursitis, and was rubbed on the workers’ joints after a long day of working on the railroad.Enter Clark Stanley, “The Rattlesnake King.” Originally a cowboy, Stanley claimed to have studied with a Hopi medicine man who turned him on to the healing powers of snake oil. He took this new found “knowledge” on the road, performing a show-stopping act at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, where he reached into a bag, grabbed a rattlesnake, cut it open, and squeezed it. He labeled the extract snake oil, even though the FDA later confirmed that his products didn’t contain any kind of snake oil, rattlesnake or otherwise.
I’m not suggesting someone not get the vaccine that the snakeoil salesman Fauci is selling. You’re grown ups you make decisions for yourself every single day. I’m saying don’t you dare try to bully me or anyone else who looks at the history of science and recognizes that something so quickly thrown together and sold by media, politicians and “learned men and women” is safe. I don’t believe it for one second. I’m entitled to question authority and I will continue to do so as long as I live. I leave you with the last time the government went bull in the china shop with a vaccine.
