The bodies weren’t even cold before Democratic presidential hopefuls climbed over each other to be the first one in front of a TV camera to renew their stale and hollow pledge to ban assault rifles. Biden even went so far as to pledge that he, personally, was going to take down the NRA. It’s all great theater, but it doesn’t address the root cause of the growing problem of innocent people being gunned down, en masse, for no obvious reason.
Politicians can ban all the guns they want and people are still going to find a way to kill other people. It is human nature; take away the means by which someone wants to do something, and they will just find another way. Just ask people living in the United Kingdom. Guns were banned and people with the intent to kill just busted out the knives. And the acid. A decent number just took it old school and started using sticks or stones or clubs. Hell, some of the lazier people are just running other people down in the streets.
Aside from the obvious revolt by legal gun owners being told their guns were going to be confiscated by the federal government – for their own good – there are 900 lb gorillas running wild all over the country that no politician from either side wants to get anywhere near:
People hate. People are angry. People mistreat other people. People are victimized. People are marginalized. The needy are ignored. The homeless are forgotten. The veterans are abused. The schools are failing the children. The parents are failing the children. The system is failing the parents and the schools. And all the while, the country is filling up with the illegals that have moved to the front of the line ahead of all of these classes of Americans. And the police? They have become active targets, and can barely protect anyone but themselves anymore.
One thing that creature Cortez was right about, the last time this happened when she got angry at the notion that people were sending their prayers rather than handing over their guns, is that prayers really aren’t the answer. Politicians in Washington pulling their heads out of their asses and starting to figure out how to make everyone’s lives so much better that they don’t find themselves needing to kill as many people as possible before they are killed themselves is the answer.
I will sign up in support of banning assault rifles only after the crackpot politicians ban anger and hate and poverty and the abuses done to be helpless and the innocent. And fully and effectively enforce it.
Not holding my breath.
