Trump Nominates BUNNIES to Supreme Court!!!!!
Come on, now. You can’t seriously oppose BUNNIES, can you?
How about the optics of this one. A guaranteed large (yuuuge???) national TV audience (no network was gonna refuse to run this one), and on stage with nominee Brett Kavanaugh are Mommy Bunny and the two little Bunettes, just as cute as a button. Throw in a little amiable bunny-family banter. What’s that spell? Just a massive dose of the cutes!
It might not, per se, win him a single vote in the Senate, but then the real fight is at home in all the Red States where the incumbent Democrat Senator is running for re-election in a state Trump won (10 of them) , some of them by double-digit margins (5 of them).
That incumbent will be trying to dance on the edge of a razor: he/she *has* to oppose confirmation to stay in the good graces of the party leadership (and all the crazies that dox people and harass them in restaurants). And somehow convince voters in their Red home state that they are somehow justified in voting against BUNNIES!!!!!!
If you are one of those senators, how do you pull that off?
My thinking is that choosing this nomination was complicated. It had to happen before the mid-terms, because to postpone it was to look timid. Trump doesn’t do timid, and his support base (us!!!) are about done with timid as well. In a level playing field, I think we jump all over Amy Barrett. But Republicans sit at about 50-49 in the Senate, and we have a handful of moderate Senators that will torpedo conservatives at the drop of a hat. Suzy Collins would vote against Barrett. But given the electoral landscape, it’s nearly a guarantee we’ll have 54 or better post-election. So you make the pick of a good, genuine originalist who carries a slight “moderate” taint, that is in my view unwarranted, but boy does it sure shut up our moderate/Establishment wing. AND BUNNIES!!!!!
With Ruth Ginsburg a walking corpse, you save Barrett to be her replacement. Play the “keep the woman seat” card, and at that time you’ll have a 54-46 or better margin in the Senate to work with. The result is you get yourslef a 50-52 year old, serious Christian with great originalist bona fides for the next 30 years. Well, and there’s one more small advantage. The knock on Barrett is an awfully thin record. Let’s take the next 2-3-4 years to make double-sure she is the real deal.
