Another Old Soldier Fades From the Scene

We learned this past week of the passing of fellow blogger and patriot Phil Bassette, aka Grumpy Elder, the purveyor of Grumpy Opinions.  In addition to blogging himself, Phil provided a venue for some of us ‘right wingers’ to vent, as well as hosting some websites for some other bloggers.    An announcement of his passing can be seen here.

Phil was a veteran and always gracious to his fellow vets and patriots, really anybody who dropped in.  Other tributes to him may be found at his site and also such venues as Maggie’s Notebook, Puma by Design001, and Bob Mack’s Be Sure You’re RIGHT, Then Go Ahead.

On a personal note, as I shared with some of the others:

The guy was special. If you have read my bio accompanying my posts, it is all true. I am unaccomplished, feeble, unorganized and past it. Yet Phil saw a couple of my posts at UP (yes, those folks are gracious to a fault as well 🙂 ) and invited me to post at Grumpy Opinions. So now I’m feeling like Charles Krauthammer. You know – ‘syndicated’ and stuff. 🙂 Having reached the later stages of life and not amounted to much, to get my fifteen minutes of fame on the World Wide Web was kind of an ego trip. Sometimes, little things mean a lot. Like most of you, I never met Phil in person, don’t know what he looks like to this day (Yes, Gretchen, please share your photos), but I know his heart was pure gold and he has a special place in Heaven.

It’s a great big patriot family we have here on the ‘net – in blogs and email groups, and we’ve lost one of our best members. May God bless Grumpy Elder for everything he did and comfort his family in their grief.

Your title reminds me of the intro lyrics to an old Todd Rundgren song.

A million old soldiers will fade away
But a dream goes on forever…
