THE CONGRESS SHALL HAVE THE POWER TO …….declare war, grant letters of marque and reprisal,and make rules concerning captures on land and water;
President Obama’s spokespeople informed the press that he would not be meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel when he comes to the US March 3 to address a joint session of Congress. The reason given was that it would go against longstanding policy of not appearing to influence the elections of our allies, since Netanyahu is up for re-election this spring.
As if. Everyone who is awake knows that Obama is snubbing Netanyahu because Congress went around the White House and the State Department and directly invited the Israeli Prime Minister of it’s own volition. So of course this will be much fodder for the 24-hour news cycle for the next six weeks. For our part, we sincerely hope the address to Congress is televised and has the highest possible viewership and ratings possible. We hope that the standing ovation which Bibi (his nickname) is sure to receive, along with the sharpest and most eloquent of his remarks are played over and over again all over the world.
But beyond that, what we hope is that this newfound assertion of the rights of Congress, as the people’s representatives, to engage on the foreign policy front, is just the beginning for the newly-minted Republican majority. For it is abundantly clear that the current Commander-in-Chief cares not one whit about his obligations as Leader of the Free World. He abandoned that position almost immediately upon assuming office with his infamous apology tours and pronouncements about American arrogance. This on top of the fact that he is not fit, morally or by experience or commitment to principle, to lead America, let alone the world.
We do not know what the next 24 months will bring, how much dereliction of duty or outright treason Obama will commit. But we know the world is anxiously on pins and needles, fearful of what will happen as the various terrorist organizations march unchecked not only across the Middle East and Africa, but increasingly to the North and West of those territories. It is thus incumbent on the people of the United States, through their representatives, to show the solidarity and unity of purpose America has with free people and those aching with all their hearts to be free of the brutality of fascist Islamic totalitarianism.
Until such time as a true leader can be found to install in the seat of power at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Congress must take up the slack in every way possible. And that includes diplomatic and world-stage maneuvering as well as concrete acts like the upcoming sanctions to be imposed on the Iranian regime.
Keep it up, Congress. Don’t let this be a flash-in-the-pan event.
Oh, and about that power to declare war……..
