Or, “Why Educators and Politicians Better Wake Up and Heed the Alarms About Common Core”
Those sounding the alarm about the ‘Common Core State Standards Initiative’ (CCSSI) warn us that the evilness of revisionist history rears it’s ugly head through the Common Core curriculum stratagem of asking students to analyze and critique writings about historical events in order to assess their validty. Proponents of CCSSI mostly assert that the exercise is completely benign and only geared to promote and assess student’s skills in critical thinking.
Well, lo and behold, criticism and analytical skills notwithstanding, putting the Common Core standards into actual practice can produce some eye-opening results:
…..the Rialto Unified School District in Southern California assigned eighth grade students an essay on whether the Holocaust occurred or was “merely a political scheme created to influence public emotion and gain.” A follow-up investigation by The Los Angeles Daily News indicates that based on the project many of the students are now convinced that the Holocaust is a hoax.
The assignment was developed to meet common core standards.
The apologies, when they are occasionally forthcoming, by school administrators or school boards around the country when these little pecadillos are exposed, are usually in the nature of “Well, it’s not the standards which are at fault, or the curriculum, but merely the judgement of the teacher issuing the particular assignment.” Actually, no, that is not the problem. The problem is the rationalization that supposedly is behind many of the Common Core Standards in that it doesn’t matter the source or validity or the factual foundation behind the texts being given for the students to assay. In other words it’s not the truth or historical basis that is important, it is how well the students can argue their position based on their assimilation of the articles they are instructed to digest and assimilate. In other words, creating little devil’s advocates, or allowing children to create their own realities as long as they do it skillfully, is every bit as important as fact or truth, or more so.
In all of this we are reminded of one of the Left’s favorite canards that “One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.” That is a guiding principle behind historical revisionism and a favorite tactic of the Marxist-Leninist/ types. But one man’s estimation of another man’s character does not validate the other man’s action, nor does it necessarily even factually describe the man or his action. That’s why we study history in the context in which it occurred, and we don’t base our knowledge of what occurred on someone’s value judgement of what occurred, but on the historical record.
Our question today is – “Do they really want to proceed on down this road? Are they so sure of their power and control of the narrative, and of the malleability of the American public’s value judgement that they can quash traditional learning, lore, language and social acumen and create alternative historical realities with relative impunity and inconsequence to them or their Statist desires?”
Upon consideration of the success they have indeed enjoyed in exploiting public gullibility lo these last four decades, perhaps they have reason enough to keep on going down that road. And perhaps admonishing educators and politicians about the perversion of education is pure folly on our part. Perhaps the demographics we need to appeal to are Jews and Blacks. Because apparently, the education system in this country can be manipulated to expunge the historical record of events occurring as recently as seventy years ago,state-sponsored genocide, and therefore doing the same to the institution of slavery in America150 years ago is certainly not out of the realm of possibility..
There is a political party in this country adamant in promoting the notion that the institution of slavery in this country, and the subsequent Jim Crow laws and discrimination and denial of civil rights – none of that had anything whatsoever to do with their side of the aisle. Didn’t happen that way, they say; it was all the Republicans’ fault and they can concoct all sorts of narratives supporting their assertion. The historical record? Not germane to the issue. What’s important is how the constituents “feel” about the issue based on the propaganda they are asked to digest.
Well, we see what happened in Rialto, California when the historical record no longer matters. For a significant number, statistically speaking, the Holocaust never happened. It was a ruse; a scam; a figment of someone’s imagination.
Here’s a tip to our African-American (or Black, if you prefer) fellow citizens: You don’t need to worry too much about the Cliven Bundy’s or the Donald Sterling’s out there. What you had better be concerned about is the national power elite in this country which can erase a major part of your historical heritage, no matter how recent or how far in the distant past, on a whim. Like it never even happened.
