Of All God’s Angels, Only Lucifer Knows Fear

Sometimes we need to step back and try to picture the Grand War behind this war we’re engaged in with the Left. From time to time we need to consider Evil a little more closely.

Is Barack Obama evil? Or does he just do evil things? Is he in league with Evil, doing Evil’s bidding, or a craven narcissist.? (I could have asked that of virtually every politician, only Obama comes to mind more often.)

When Miley Cyrus did her gyrations at the MTV show the other night, I’m sure we agree Evil was all about, but was It in her gyrations, or her heart and mind? What about those who lusted after her, or thought her cool and wanted to be like her? How about her proud parents? The show’s producers? The show’s advertisers?

Evil sure abounded that night, but just where was it? In whose bosoms did it abide? And what was Its purpose in that

spectacle, for Evil never does nothing for nothing? Can you spot Evil in a Geico commercial? Bud-Lite? A CitiBank ad? Almost everyone spotted an aspect of Evil in the Harry Potter stories, but was Evil hero or villain in those books? Or neither?

If all we do is blog about Evil, are we then serving Evil’s purposes by not raising a bruise on His shins from time to time; not impeding Its plan? If we complain about Evil, even as repetitiously as a Pharisee thanks God that he is not a common man, but do no more, then go to sleep contented that we have done Good’s work, in whose service are we—really? “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” (Edmund Burke)

See, it can get complicated, as when we see the pursuit of Good actually doing Evil’s bidding, but it happens all the time. If you know Evil at all you know He is at His most clever when He seduces us to believe we are serving Good when we are in fact sleeping at the switch.

Suggestion: Start looking for Evil in the most ordinary of places. But keep a sharp lookout all the time. Scrutinize and questioning everything. Turn this into a habit, for you see, if we are going to fight Evil, as you all seem to profess to want to do, we have to know where to look for It and how to recognize It. We need to know Its ways, so then we can defeat it. Right?

With all men, Evil exists on two planes; directly in our personal lives and indirectly in the world around us, acting on us externally through third, (even fourth, fifth and sixth) parties. In the former, we are taught to resist Evil, “Just say No.” “Get thee behind me, Satan.” But Evil also works through mediums many levels deep to assault us, using books, mass media, music, bowling teams, all our institutions and associations, even friends who are entirely innocent of the scam He’s playing on us. Evil may not have direct fingerprints anywhere, but standing back behind the curtains He is as adept as a chess master as He is a home invader artist.

So resistance is not the same as revolution then. At some point we have to engage ourselves in trying to do harm to Evil. To rise up. Evil needs to know that a large number of people are in active revolt against Him; not just resisting, not just saying “No” – but fighting back.

It’s our way of telling Evil we understand the scale of His intentions.

And why must we do this? Because of all the Archangels, only Lucifer knows fear.

So if we are to really fight Him, we have to make Him and His minions afraid. And no, Twitter doesn’t hurt Him one bit.

Evil, the Proper Noun

I’m legalistic about Evil and encourage you to be so, as well. It is a noun, an adjective, and an adverb; all three. But above all things, Evil is a Proper Noun. In fact, Evil is a sentient being, just one in all likelihood. This is a profession of faith for me, so you don’t have to agree. But I believe there is an Evil out there that actually goes by that name—-and is damned proud of it. Lucifer, Satan, Mephistopheles, Ol’ Clewfoot, the Devil also work. The Bible has always told us this, but C S Lewis and J R R Tolkien, the philosophers, not the fabulists, have convinced me of it.

This means Evil is not a creation of man’s devising, as psychologists have been seduced to say. Evil is not a scapegoat or a straw man we created, He is real.

If you want to take the time you will probably come to the same conclusion. And then all the other parts of what ails this world, and your world, will fit, from who and what Evil is, from who and what are His carriers and dupes, silver tongued devils and seductees, to how Evil “Do that Voodoo that Hedoo so well.”

We see evil deeds every day, but not necessarily done by Evil’s hand. He often uses surrogates, especially unknowing ones. (*Satan does have an army, which I’ll discuss at another time. See below.) You can see Evil in every prideful, vain, lustful, gluttonous, greedy, slothful, wrathful and envious act, hence the Seven Deadly Vices. And you also know the seven personal antidotes, the Virtues, which, never forget, preceded Evil in nature. (This was always God’s hole card, something He hardwired into Man.) You can see Evil in the all the ways these vices are contrived and woven; lies with golden tongues, seductive “come hither” glances and long-legged strides that “look like some stray cat gettin’ fed” (Billy Ed Wheeler) , whispered conspiracies, insults and threats that turn friend against friend, etc, etc.

Someone once told me, to understand Satan’s prowess for argument and persuasion, all you have to do is understand that while He holds all atheists in the palm of His hand to do His bidding, above all other creatures in the universe, Satan knows best that God most assuredly does exist. Still He soothes, comforts and persuades them with language and arguments that can seduce the finest minds in the universe, that a thing He knows to be a lie is the truth.

For Evil, this is easy.

King of the Earth

Evil, of course, has his fingerprints over all politics. As Mark Twain once said, “Satan must have executive ability since He is the spiritual head of half the world—-(pause)—and the political head of the whole of it.”

A catchy one-liner from Mr Twain, for sure, but church history confirms this, for it was common doctrine, until the Enlightenment at least, that the Prince of Darkness was indeed the King of the World, and that all Man’s history the past ten thousand years has been firmly under the control of Evil continuously—-save an uphill battle for the souls of Man the past two thousand years beginning in a small patch of Palestine (which itself was a work in progress beginning two thousand earlier from a small patch of Mesopotamia). This little guerrilla war against Evil was put on by the Captain of our team, culminating in His Final Touch in another small patch in North America, where was contrived a Grand Plan two hundred and fifty years ago that would blaze the trail for men over all the earth to turn their backs on Evil by the simple mechanism of giving them a free and fair choice between Good or Evil, freely chosen, and all the consequences pertaining thereto.

God played His hole card in 1776, knowing how Man would vote.

You see, Evil, in all those thousands of years of rule, tipped Its hand, for in all those years never were more than 5% of men on Evil’s side, always the most ruthless, while the other 95% were always voting against Him.

For them, the 95%, this was never hard. Tyranny, war, rape, pillage, incredible suffering and death, starvation, privation, injustice of every conceivable form versus freedom to choose? This had been Evil’s exclusive dominion from the beginning, and so well contrived was it that even when God’s shepherds attempted to steal portions of the human flock from Evil’s dominion in the Middle Ages, many of those shepherds became so dazzled by Satan’s sweet manipulations that they found themselves doing Lucifer’s bidding half the time, while they proclaimed in the loudest voices against Him, in God’s name, falling for every trick of the trade; gluttony, pride, vanity, and heavy on the lust.

It took the Church awhile to sort that out, and for the common man to rise to a place where he could finally grasp the ideals of freedom and self governance, still a work in progress. But for over 175 years He carved out a small island of freedom from the wilderness, the perfect laboratory, out of sight and out of mind to the rest of the world.

America was supposed to be God’s game changer in the Grand War against Evil. We were the ones who were supposed to carry Good over the goal line against Evil.

Considering the monumental scale of this Grand War, and the small territory we have occupied in it, we should all give pause, for the American laity (that’s us) have usurped Evil’s natural territory only a tiny bit (maybe 10% of the earth), and for so little a time (250 years, tops). The good news is that we were able to broadcast our seed far and wide so that virtually all men want what we had built here, and also want the tools we used to build it.

Instead, today we find ourselves sitting around the national dinner table, stomping our feet and banging our utensils because the meals have been so poorly prepared of late—-without once pausing to consider that we haven’t been back to the kitchen for over fifty years to see what’s really going on in there. We’re nailed to our our seats.

We’ve failed to remember, or recognize with ingratitude, those who set his table for us, that it is free men who are the usurpers on this earth, having only had this table a very short while. We had forgotten the shoulders we stand on and our duty of vigilance to insure that our table will be safe for future generations. We have forgotten to post guards at the gate, the front and back door, and the windows, while Evil is on the rampage.

Instead we have the gall to get up on our high horse and complain that the soup is cold and the lettuce wet.

The point I’m making, if you haven’t got it yet, is that we live in the era of Evil as the Lord of the Earth, for He has reigned far, far longer, than Good on earth. And He wants it all back. We are the usurpers here. Satan wants his territory back.

This is why we are losing…because we thought we commanded the high road since Eden. Understand your real positions then re-calibrate your weaponry.

(*Note, there are Satan’s spawn, for there really are such “things” out there— I call them Dorcs (Fr: D’Orcs)—-who have always been out there in various parts of the world, and in our part for about fifty years, that were actually created in the muck and slime of Evil’s dark chambers, Evil’s own laboratory, and who now walk this earth only to do His bidding.

The appearance of Dorcs in America is a sign of a hastening, meaning that Evil thinks He’s holding the better cards now, and is rushing to where He can slam them down and cry “Gin!” I’ll have more to say about Dorcs at another time once I come to some agreement with myself about the proper rules of engagement. I’m waffling between custard pies and gutting them like a fish.)

I sent this to a friend who reminded me of this scripture. We have the tools. It’s a matter of using them. Ephesians 6:10-18 (KJV) 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of… Read more »

Hello, Vassar. You know me under another moniker…lineholder.

We definitely are of like mind in what we believe about evil. Nice piece. Looking forward to the next portion.

The tension is almost palpable as Pope Francis and Mr. Bushmills come out almost simultaneously with different prescriptions – hugs and kisses v. gutting, or, as the pope would say”Why does everything have to be political?” and as Vassar would say “All locals are political.” Kathryn Jean Lopez defended the Pope admirably today, but I would defend Vassar by saying that he recognizes that Evil isn’t just “there”, it isn’t dormant, it isn’t benign and it certainly isn’t reactive, it’s proactive. It….wants….something. So while it may be still possible to separate religious doctrine and politics, even the lower professions like… Read more »

As you know, I took my motto from you, “When Good stands up to Evil, Evil blinks.” For the longest time, this seemed such a sure thing, as in nothing could stand in the way of Good standing up. The past 5 yrs have shown me otherwise – simply because of the realization it’s a lot harder than I realized for Good to stand up to Evil…

Your reminder of the spiritual dimensions of this battle help one to regain perspective.

From goulies and ghosties and long-leggedy beasties

And things that go bump in the night

Good Lord, deliver us! (various sources)

At some point in each and every persons life, we have all been subject to Evil in its varied (dis)guises. Vassar the proverbial hammer met nails with this thought provoking treatise.

What I would like to know is when we as God’s creations are going to turn the tables on Evil, all its servants, and the things that go bump in the night, forcing them to run for cover praying for dawn and salvation.
