Mass murder can’t be eliminated with new laws, but…

Democrats can’t let any crisis go to waste, so let’s make a trade

Modern day liberalism, like guns, magazines, oil and the genie, are; and they aren’t going back in the bottle. This conservative would be willing to allow blue states to secede and conduct their desired experiment in a world sans fossil fuels and firearms to see how long it takes for the new caveman to tire of wood burning pollution and hunting with bows and arrows, but I digress.

Since my days as a criminal defense trial lawyer, I have marveled at how every crime committed is an occasion for liberals to imagine how a new law could have prevented the latest one. As a strong proponent of the evolution of the Common Law via experience, I would not claim that the need for tweaks to the criminal code is at an end, but as a conservative we do understand that a murder-free Utopia is only possible in the next world.

Two weeks ago we were invited to imagine that men never murdered the mother of their children or committed suicide before the invention of American football and the Colt 45. Now, in the  wake of last week’s horrific mass murder at a Connecticut elementary school, we await the latest sure-fire (pun intended) remedies from Bob Costas and Jason Whitlock at halftime of the 49ers-Patriots game.

But until then, and given the above disclaimers about new laws, let us take the suggestion of federal semi-automatic gun magazine restrictions seriously. After all, can we all agree that we would oppose the sale of an imagined 5000 round/second firearm or Gatling guns to all but the military and police? Most of us already agree that restrictions of sales to the general public of only non-automatic six shooters would be draconian. So why not come to a national consensus on maximum magazine volume allowed, in exchange for some new non-gun control laws with the potential to save lives?

Want to talk about mass murder? Millions more innocent than even the children in Connecticut have been legally slaughtered while inside their mother’s wombs despite the absence of rape, incest or a threat to the mother’s life. Could we start there? Too severe? Well, how about getting the federal government out of the health care inflation business so more Americans could afford a regular physician rather than have to wait till they are near death and have a qualified emergency worthy of having their neighbors, Chinese bondholders or Ben Bernanke buy them a painkiller at the ER before being sent home to die?

At least could we please re-visit the concept of the “rights” of the mentally ill and arming school officials before we repeal the Second Amendment?

Meanwhile, could all Hollywood, NBC,and Democratic Party advocates of gun control fire their armed bodyguards before they utter another word on the subject of gun control? Nothing stops them from controlling their own guns now.
