After the Feast, Mortal Combat

With the Thanksgiving feast over, many have moved on to what really sends a thrill up their leg. Yes, I’m talking about Black Friday, when the reason for the season gets lost in hand to hand “gimmeee that, I had it first” smackdowns.

I’ve written on this subject for several years and the majority of the commenters seem to have been of the opinion of “quit overreacting” or “lighten up.” Maybe that’s because most of us have been in those Black Friday shopping lines. I’ve been there myself, but not for 15 years or so.

Anyone with eyes to see and the ability to watch a YouTube video knows that Black Friday has escalated into something that confirms American culture is changed in ways most of us seasoned citizens find hard to believe. It’s not just about saving money. It has become a competition of some sort that leads people to “camp out” for days to be at the front of the line when the doors open. Once inside, what occurs isn’t pretty. Feeding frenzies never are. Almost makes one hopeful the Mayans were right.

Watch here as, just hours ago, Walmart shoppers go wild for phones:

.
If you check the comments on the above video, you will note how race gets interjected into the madness that has become Black Friday. That’s not surprising . . . that’s the way we roll in modern America. It hasn’t always been thus.

For all their imperfections, the people of America used to live their lives on a higher plane. There was a decency in most people back several generations ago that we seem to be losing. If you are over thirty, think about your grandparents. They knew about the permanent things and for the most part tried to pass it on.

Surely decency is still in our bones. We need to bring it back into our hearts. . . and pass it on.

I don’t even go out. Anywhere. On Black Friday. Too much craziness even on the road. I use the day to put up my Christmas decorations and wait til things calm down before going shopping.

Taking God out of the public square worked so well, they thought it would be a good idea to get him out of Walmart and Costco as well. Let’s see – greed, lust, envy, covetousness, idolatry, murderous rage and foul language. Anything lacking at Martha Stewart Living? 🙂

As of noon today, over four thousand guns were legally sold in California.
The purchasers were orderly and above all, waited patiently.
