America, we have a problem.

On a Tuesday in November, 2012 America failed its intelligence test. Actually, it failed its knowledge test. In the wake of America’s most important SAT ever, after which we were sent back for four more years of public schooling, one thing became clear.

America has traded in its own culture for the promised kindnesses of the politically connected

America’s problems will not be solved in the ballot box alone. Political organizing and speechifying are not enough. America needs to recover a connection to its own past, to its own rude, scientifically sound, bracingly honest, common-sensical, aggressive, combative, loud, corn-pone ways. Most of all it needs to reject polite lies and the pseudo-scientific civic-religion of big government and rediscover the surprising truth that human will aligned with the grace of God can achieve things undreamt of by government and its legislators, apologists, bureaucrats, and officers.

Speaking on behalf of the editors of Unified Patriots, it’s time for conservatives and American traditionalists, including libertarians and classical liberals, to focus on the long struggle to restore our culture as well as the politics of things. So we are asking for your thoughts on culture, science, religion, entertainment. Bring on your poems, paeans to nature, short stories, photo essays, cartoons, and humor. Bring on your analysis of the news of the day. We will adjust the format of the site to accommodate.

Your suggestions are welcome. And as usual, the best way to suggest something is to create what it is you are suggesting and publish it here.

  1. Whole-heartedly concur beagle. This last election was a stunner. For the first time I’m starting to believe that we are a center-left country. The GOP has done a pathetic job of educating folks while they run for office.
    Our kids don’t learn about American exceptionalism in the schools, the media or the popular culture, so if it’s going to be taught, we’re going to have to do that while winning elections. In fact, if we don’t *start* doing it, we won’t *win* elections anymore.

    • Right, and I don’t think that simply “hearkening back to a simpler time” is our answer either. The American Way used to be distinctive and exceptional. It was a real difference, not just hype. But it was always based on reality, on a clear eyed appraisal of the facts on the ground and not on some kind of ideology. The principles underlying the old ways still apply today. They have to be applied and explained differently though because the language has changed. In addition, America was first a nation in which every man or woman was the equal of kings and queens. Now, thanks to public education dumbing us all down, every man and woman is prepared by our schooling to be the willing subject of our betters. This will not do!

        That reality was based on the fact that most Americans knew hardship. The Depression, WWII, Dustbowl, Americans knew what suffering was and when they weren’t suffering, they didn’t pretend to be. Racism was real, a sign mounted to the wall that read “White Drinking Fountain Only”, not a “Secret Code Word” like “incompetent”.

        I don’t think today’s citizen will have a clue how the real world works until reality actually bites them. Hard.

  2. We are sitting here instantaneously communicating with one another over great distances, sharing words, thoughts, deeds, plans, visual and audio recordings, charts and maps. And we are doing so under a constitution created 225 years ago. That ancient document, like texts even much older than that, has not limited us, not in our quest for knowledge, for a fuller expression of ourselves, for a better existence or for a fuller pursuit of love and understanding of our fellow man. We have never been more free. We are no less capable than we have ever been. We just have to take what God has wrought and what we have wrought under His Divine inspiration and use it wisely. We will find a way.

  3. First, I stubbornly persist in the old idea of a University-style
    reading list, perhaps containing some short (not chapter by chapter)
    book reviews and recommendations. The idea was first proposed in the
    Ban-Central era, but never came to fruition as I remember. One fellow
    over there used to do book reviews, but they were chapter-by-chapter,
    much too long and detailed. I’m thinking along the lines of a brief
    synopsis, enough to give the casual reader enough to decide whether or
    not a given book/author would be worth follow-up. I don’t want to start a
    literary society, but giving folks pointers to good resources might be
    beneficial to our side. And the topics needn’t (shouldn’t) be all
    strictly political, right versus left polemics. Some of my very favorite
    Thomas Sowell works concern economic priniciples, not politics. (And as
    an undergrad, I HATED econ courses!) Possessing a bit of foundational
    knowledge is useful if and when a discussion turns to policy and helps
    us further the debate. Additionally, would a movie/TV show review kill
    us? Sports stuff? Military? Shucks, recipes?

    Second, along the same line, I’m thinking Ace has a point here.
    (If linky no work: https://minx.cc/?post=335098) This is a really long post, but the theme he develops is appealing. If
    you suffer through the whole thing, check out the comments. Excepting
    the goofy/obscene off-topic points, what comes through is that folks get
    tired of a steady stream of politics day in and day out; there’s more
    to life. Showing we can have some fun and are ‘normal’ may well attract
    some who could be persuadable in other areas as well. Plus, disregarding
    this approach kind of predisposes us to becoming angry all the time,
    just like THEY are. That’s bad for our collective blood pressure,
    off-putting, and bottom line, not really who we are at all. Righteous
    indignation has its place, just not 24-7, 52 weeks a year. And not all
    news is bad news (bleak as things my currently appear.) There are
    actually fun topics to be explored, like for me, motorcycles! And
    firearms! And, food!

  4. I wrote this a while back as an answer to a question posed by Vassar on why certain unsettling things were happening in our population.

    Why is this Happening…

    Because we forgot where we came from.

    We forgot to speak aloud our legends by the fires on cold nights or under the
    summer stars.

    We forgot to teach our children the hardships of generations long past.

    We forgot to teach our children nothing comes easy or for free and there is
    always a price to pay.

    We forgot the radiance of freedom’s light, which has shown the way all over
    this planet.

    We forgot and became lazy, not remembering our duties and obligations.

    We forgot.

    Though now, some of us are remembering.

    We are speaking out loud our legends and memories,

    and we will not be silenced.

    By God’s grace, we will not be silenced.

    ~~~~~~~~~
    There had been a time when sensitive subjects could be discussed rationally without threat of condemnation in the public arena. Now, the mere mention of basically anything considered a sacred cow, can be used to vilify and permanently destroy not only the person doing the questioning, but also destroy anyone associated with that person.
    This nation does not need another Salem Witch Hunt in order to silence citizens who exercise their First Amendment Right of Free Speech.
    I am positive that most people do not want to be tagged with racist, hater, etc because certain practices or behaviors of our elected officials (and their supporters) are called into question.
