We Can Do This The Easy Way Or ……

Uh, didn’t we just deal with involuntary ‘mental health checkups’ yesterday in Virginia?  Seems there are efforts coming together all across this great land to see to the healthy state-of-mind of our populations.

Sign up or pay up. The City of Chicago is urging its employees and their eligible spouses to join the city’s “innovative wellness program,” or else pay an additional $50 a month for their health care plan.

“Our program will change lives, make our workforce healthier, and save taxpayers money,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said on Thursday. “It will only work if people join, and I’m so pleased to report that we’ve had well over 22,000 employees or spouses join the program.”

And the pertinent clause:

Chicago Lives Healthy provides free annual health screenings, physical and mental health checkupscall-ins, and “wellness activities” for employees. The city calls it the largest municipal wellness program in the world.

And of course the quiet, benign, unassuming “questionairre” :

The third step is a “Well-Being Assessment” – described as “a confidential questionnaire that assesses life and environmental factors that are critical to your health, well-being and your ability to improve both.” The assessment consists of 60 questions “to get a better sense of factors that can’t be tested.” Those factors include one’s health history, mental health, stress, and “barriers to change.”

Oh. and remember….this is all strictly voluntary, except refusal to comply will result in a $50/month penal- , er, ta-, er charge.

But the burning question, what inquiring minds (heh, that was unplanned but apropos, hey?) really want to know, is in overcoming these “barriers to change”, will there be a co-pay on the lobotomies?

There.  Now isn’t that better?

    • Whether free or a fee, if you follow the link and download the pdf where it describes the program, you come across this: “This wellness program is designed to be participation-based rather than outcome-based.” It goes on to say if you need to quit smoking but don’t, you won’t be penalized. Well, that’s big of them, but, uh, getting a trophy doesn’t make you any healthier, now does it? So what is the real goal of the program? If you researched it, you could probably find it’s origins , or at least it’s pushers, from among the same genre that tried to get everybody to “participate” in ‘protecting’ the environment. They don’t care what the outcome is, they want people to participate, to go along with the program. They don’t really care what you do, they give you ten or twelve options – going to lectures, chatting with a ‘credentialed’ health professional, doodling on the internet. It’s called….conditioning….conformity…..joining…….getting your mind right.
