Yes, he’s coming BACKKK…. to Ohio again. Tomorrow, Wednesday August 1 for another campaign stop. Obama will be flying Air Force 1 into Mansfield Lahm Airport where the 179th unit of the Air National Guard is stationed. This base is the home of the C-27J program however Obama’s proposed cuts in the military budget has targeted this base for closure.
In addition to the loss of our national security, the threat to close the base will result in the loss of about 1,000 jobs. In another stunning moment of incompetence, denial or both White House Press Secretary Jay Carney was clueless when a reporter questioned him about this:
“Our message to [Air Force] Secretary Donley was clear: eliminating the C-27J program is pennywise but pound foolish. In addition to affecting roughly 800 jobs in Mansfield, eliminating the C-27J program would affect domestic relief efforts and shift Air Force operations to cargo planes that are more expensive to operate,”
And Republican Ohio Senator Rob Portman echoed Sen. Brown’s concerns:
“If President Obama has his way, his Air Force One arrival would be one of the final flights into Mansfield-Lahm Airport. Despite numerous reports highlighting the value of the 179th, and the critical capability they and their C-27J aircraft provide to our deployed soldiers, President Obama wants to do away with the mission for the 800 Guardsmen at the base. Time and again, these Ohioans have answered the call to serve. They must be pretty frustrated to see the president drop into town, ignore their award-winning work, and fail to give them a straight answer about his plans to end their important mission,” Portman said Monday.
The C-27Js will all be lined up to greet Obama tomorrow as they should be. The 179th announced in May it has seen three prestigious honors. I’m sure Obama and Jay Carney are “clueless” about this as well.
