R.I.P. OC Register

A Death in the OC

A group led by Boston-based investor Aaron Kushner announced Monday that it has bought the parent company of the Orange County Register and more than half a dozen smaller newspapers for an undisclosed sum.

Kushner’s group, 2100 Trust LLC, expects to close its purchase of Freedom Communications Holdings Inc. within 30 days. Kushner is the former chief executive of a greeting-card company who had previously tried unsuccessfully to purchase the Boston Globe.

The sale completes the process of dismantling Freedom Communications, which has been steadily selling off newspaper properties since emerging from bankruptcy protection in April 2010.

Kushner’s group also tried to take a controlling interest in Maine’s Portland Press Herald. However, union’s nixed that deal.

And the ghoul against Freedom has some strange friends…Obama, Dean, Biden

  1. Ever have one of those there is more going on here moments?
Something sparked my memory and this is what it sparked

From an article: FULL DISCLOSURE: The Register has a partnership agreement with KOCE

Is this the real reason he wanted the paper?

  2. Sorry about that Loren. I failed to follow the axiom of never say or write anything when hot under the collar. Not a good thing to be especially for a red head.

My nice little family owned county Libertarian newspaper for the last 75 years was purchased by a man with ZERO newspaper experience. He is part of a LLC and I don’t know who else has their fingers in it. The grandkids of the founder after years of infighting are selling.

Our local PBS which was out of the local JC until a few years ago, has a partnership agreement with the newspaper. I’m wondering if maybe someone in the LLC thinks they will have influence over the TV station.
