36 Inches of Government Regulation

Is government regulation a problem? Not at all. My goodness, the government is just peachy to work with. I loved the ADA inspection at one of our stores several months ago where the rude government lady flagged us for non-compliance with ADA rules. Oh no, our check signing slide out shelf for the disabled was 30 inches long instead of 36 inches. Easy fix she says. Just have “someone” cut 12 inches off the bottom of the whole cash wrap counter and then we would be in compliance. Uh, what do you say to someone that stupid.

After endless back and forth, we found a supplier who makes a 36 inch long add-on check signing shelf. A little custom item you see, low demand, and so a glorified piece of laminate covered plywood with fancy hinges costs us $750 plus $200 for a guy to install. Aggravation and lost opportunity cost, unknown.

Gee, now all 4 of our wheelchair bound check writing customers can write on a board 36 inches long instead of 30 inches. Thank you Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. And not to be forgotten, thank you, George Herbert Walker Bush.

Read my lips: government is the ultimate job killer.

Texas native. Conservative small businessman with 31 years experience. Government should roll back the nanny state. No country can tax its way to prosperity. The question isn't who will let me but who will stop me?

I’m still waiting for my first wheelchair bound customer. He cost me around $1200 to get a ramp and make the restroom wheelchair friendly. I hope he’s ready for $1200 worth of work, cuz he’s gettin’ it.

I think regulations kill more jobs than taxes. We have had much higher taxes than we do now. Didn’t kill the economy.
Not that I favor high taxes they do hurt but regulations like that cost money AND the thought of regulations like that cause people to give up on starting or expanding business.

Seems to me she should have been paying you to get the six inches she wanted…
