The Obama Re-election Bid: Sucking Like a Hoover

From Ace of Spades:

Bill McInturff of the Republican polling firm Public Opinion Strategies is publicly releasing a report on the current mood of the country.

Lots of interesting stuff in it. But the most interesting stuff is about the Michigan Index on Consumer Sentiment.

No president has been reelected when the Index stood at 75 or below (date of snapshot unspecified; I assume they mean “on the day of the election”).

The average read of the Index for successful reelection bids is 95.9.

The average read for unsuccessful reelection bids is 74.8.

The current read on the index? 76.2, just above the average for unsuccessful bids.

Nah, I’m totally lying, just to get your attention focused on the real read: The Index currently stands at 55.7, much, much lower than even the average for reelection losers.

It is accepted that Presidents don’t get re-elected with unemployment above 8% and there’s zero chance BO will beat that.

As I posted elsewhere, his approval chart looks like a long, skinny X:

I think that will continue, as it becomes more and more socially acceptable to admit that we elected a doofus.

Ace calls it a cascade of preference, I believe, which means (if I understand him right) that the mushy, uninformed middle just goes along with the rest of us as much as they can. As they watch his ratings fall, they decide he must not be doing that well at all. It’s not that they know or care how he is actually doing, they are just watching the polls and going along for the ride. It’s not completely stupid…well, yes, it is, but anyway…it’s a lot like putting on your brakes when you see other people going slowly on the highway. You just assume if they’re slowing down, something must be wrong. In this case, they’re right, though I’ll not forgive or forget that they put the stupid [redacted] in office using the same technique.

Anyway, let’s face it, the economy sucks and it’s not going to quit sucking at least partly due to BO’s EPA which seems determined to snuff any sign of life in it. Housing values are still going down, foreclosures are going up, unemployment is stickily high and the deficits look like Mt. Everest, and they will be every bit as difficult to conquer. Jobs are not returning in spite of BO’s recent pivot (or at least he will soon be pivoting no, wait…planning, no, wait… giving a speech about a plan about jobs) and 350 mile bus trip across America in his million dollar made in Canada buses.

America may be stupid, but we can be taught, and we are going to use those hard earned lessons in 2012 to send BO to the lecture circuit where he and TOTUS can continue their beautiful friendship away from the levers of power. May he fade into obscurity better than his predecessor, Jimmah Carter, did.

I don’t want to get overconfident, but right now, it looks like we’re going to get a reasonably good candidate (I’m thinking it’s Rick Perry, but don’t tell anyone so I don’t jinx it) and BO is as likely to win in ’12 as a Helen Thomas look-a-like is likely to win the Miss America pageant. All good news for me.

I was born in Saginaw, Michigan, and I grew up in a house on Saginaw Bay. My daddy was a poor, hardworking Saginaw fisherman. Too many times he came home with too little pay. Naw, not really, but it sounds more interesting than the real bio, so there you are.

  1. Loved the article Queenie.

But could you please warn your faithful readers when you post a pic like the one you closed the article with? I not only lost the lunch I just consumed, I’m not sensing my appetite coming back anytime soon.

  2. Like they say, after years of doing what you want to do, and being who you really are, you get the face you deserve. I think of Jimmy stewart and Mother Teresa just as a couple of examples whose faces were weathered with age but in the end she still radiated love, and he, fundamental decency. Then there’s Helen……
