Feral Youth: Not Deprived, But Definitely Depraved

What the riots in England and the union debacle in Wisconsin have shown clear thinking people and perhaps a few who had been clouded is that the problem isn’t being poor, it is succumbing to the Seven Deadly Sins. What liberalism/socialism/Communism has wrought on the entire World is a serious problem that money and stuff won’t fix. You see 50+ years of “sharing the wealth” have indeed created societies of animals. When you no longer have to work to get your food, your housing, the clothes on your back, well you have no pride and ultimately no humanity. The saying “pride goeth before the fall” as all sayings, are born out of truth. What liberalism/socialism/leftism/progressivism (any ideology left of center) has brought to the World is a couple of generations of feral humans.

When you get up with nothing productive to do you will find something to do, it will seem exciting as you contemplate your devilish designs because nothing in your life is “thrilling” now. You will come up with more and more ludicrous things to do to create a sense of excitement to satiate your human need to “do something”. If The Definition Of Liberalism Is To Help One’s Fellow Man, Then Democrats Have Failed

Nonetheless, someone explained that these riotous Mancunian youth were growing up in “deprivation,” and the rioters themselves seemed disposed to agree. Like they say in “West Side Story,” “I’m depraved on account of I’m deprived.” We’ve so accepted the correlation that we don’t even notice that they’re no longer deprived, but they are significantly more depraved.

In fact, these feral youth live better than 90 percent of the population of the planet. They certainly live better than their fellow youths halfway around the world who go to work each day in factories across China and India to make the cool electronic toys young Westerners expect to enjoy as their birthright. In Britain, as in America and Europe, the young take it for granted that this agreeable division of responsibilities is as permanent a feature of life as the earth and sky: Rajiv and Suresh in Bangalore make the state-of-the-art gizmo, Kevin and Ron in Birmingham get to play with it. That’s just the way it is. And, because that’s the way it is, Kevin and Ron and the welfare state that attends their every need assume ’twill always be so.

To justify their looting, the looters appealed to the conventional desperation-of-deprivation narrative: They’d “do anything to get more money.” Anything, that is, except get up in the morning, put on a clean shirt and go off to do a day’s work. That concept is all but unknown to the homes in which these guys were raised. Indeed, “Newsnight” immediately followed the riot discussion with a report on immigration to Britain from Eastern Europe. Any tourist in London quickly accepts that, unless he hails a cab or gets mugged, he will never be served by a native Londoner: Polish baristas, Balkan waitresses, but, until the mob shows up to torch his hotel, not a lot of Cockneys. A genial Member of Parliament argued that the real issue underlying the riots is “education and jobs,” but large numbers of employers seem to have concluded that, if you’ve got a job to offer, the best person to give it to is someone with the least exposure to a British education.

There is no doubt as I get older that Conservatism will be the savior of the World as evidence of Socialism/Communism/Statism continues to pour in, and shows those ideologies to be failures.

  1. A lovely post for a lovely Saturday, Jaded and thank you for it! The glorious proof of your thesis is the character of the American Armed Forces; not all youth is depraved and our heroes exemplify honoring God, country and one another, unlike certain rioters I could mention…

    • You’re absolutely right mriggio, but it takes a couple years, the better part of their first enlistment, for them to “buy into” the program. I realized in ’94 while I was a Drill Sergeant at Ft Benning, GA kids just don’t grow up like I did. I grew up on a farm, when it was harvest time harvest happened. You just did it, it couldn’t wait, you couldn’t postpone it for a concert and you damn sure couldn’t quit because it was too hard. They learned but you could see it was a new experience for the vast majority of them.

Their forced immersion in the Army Values helped as well. Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. You know how the Army loves acronyms, LDRSHIP, that’s a damn fine acronym to force young people to live up to. Now if we could start forcing some of our politicians to set an example for our youts we might actually start to get somewhere!

      • Agree, it takes awhile. While I never was a DI (BTW thank you for doing that thankless job!), I was a recruiter for some years. Even over the course of 6 months or so, from ship-to-basic to come home on boot leave after Advanced Training, I could easily spot the beginnings of change in those I ‘put into the bag’. Military service can be transformational, but the right stuff needs to be there from the get-go, and me thinks many of our youts really do have what it takes, they just get screwed-up by their ‘education’ and ‘environment’.

  2. Here’s another acronym, this one from MTV’s Jersey Shore, it is gaining some currency: GTL. One must be gym(med) tanned and laundered before one goes out at night for drinking, prowling and the occasional fight. Which leades to the question, where do these people get the money and time to do this all-day expensive prep, six days a week? What are their career ambitions five years from now? ten? Do any of the girls they are trying to pick up ask them if they have jobs now? Same questions for Snooki and the Jersey Shore girls, and same answers as the guys. I think we have our own gone-feral yout’s here, Jaded. They are not as far along the Punk Cycle as in London, maybe, but when they decide to start burning stuff because GTL has gotten boring, look out.

    • I saw that acronym in People Magazine this week and thought to myself” boy life is rough”. I tell you when the hammer comes down and the hammer MUST come down on the spending, there will injuries.

obtw where do they get the money? those Jersey Shore or other “reality tv” people get paid 20K-75K to head up parties at nightclubs…seriously.

      • Like Beckel’s gig on Fox, it’s a (good) living I suppose. I try to find a a flower blooming here or there in the cultural dung heap we must deal with. In this case, it is the amazing factoid that the character Snooki, starlet of the series actually (besides Michelle Obama) was one of the first Americans to diss Obama back in his heyday . Seems one of his enacted taxes back in 2009 hit tanning salon patrons (no joke). She had some dialogue in one episode actually dissing Obama for that (how did it get past MTV producers?) and telling the world she was going to the orange tanning lotion stuff. Some in media and politics trace Obama’s beginniing, continual slide in the polls to that exact moment. I. kid. you. not. Well we gotta take our wins where we can find ’em. (?!)
