In 2012, New Mexico is a battleground state the GOP needs to win in order to have a majority in the US Senate. It reminds me in many ways of Florida in 2010. If you recall the GOP establishment, NRSC, John McCain et al were all in favor of Gov. Charlie Crist winning the nomination for US Senate. It was just a forgone conclusion that he would become the next US Senator from Florida. Another Floridian, Marco Rubio, decided to run for this US Senate seat, and the GOP establishment said he is polling too low to win. We know what happened in 2010 in Florida.
The GOP establishment, NRSC, Karl Rove, John McCain et al are all in favor of former US House member Heather Wilson winning the nomination for US Senate. She also led the transition team for Gov-elect Susana Martinez. To some it is just a foregone conclusion that she will become the next US Senator from New Mexico. Another New Mexican, John Sanchez, is running for this US Senate seat, and the GOP establishment says he is polling too low to win. To quote Yogi Berra:
It’s like deja vu all over again.
New Mexico’s primary is 10 months off. John Sanchez owns a roofing company in Albuquerque, and mostly self-financed his primary election campaign for lieutenant governor in 2010. Sanchez is a new face, but he has statewide electoral success. Having said that, can he put together the organization, and does he have the political savvy he needs to go against Heather Wilson? Sanchez, who has recently embraced the Tea Party, has pointed to Wilson’s support of TARP when she was in Congress. Wilson has defended her vote as the best decision given the dire circumstances of the time. I don’t know what the decision 10 months from now will be in New Mexico. Perhaps the 2010 Missouri US Senate race is a better analogy than the 2010 Florida US Senate race. Just to refresh your memory, the winner in that primary was US House member Roy Blunt instead of Tea Party favorite Chuck Purgason. I personally believe that to turn our aircraft carrier ship of state around it is better to go with the new face than the old pol. You decide. I have below some video clips of John Sanchez. His web site is here.
