Senator McCain, trying hard to appear like he had actually seen a movie after he took his sweetheart to a viewing of “North By Northwest”, said this today:
“The idea seems to be if the House GOP refuses to raise the debt ceiling, a default crisis or gradual government shutdown will ensue and the public will turn en masse against Barack Obama. The Republican House that failed to raise the debt ceiling would somehow escape all the blame. Then Democrats would have no choice but to pass a balanced budget amendment and reform entitlements, and the Tea Party hobbits could return to Middle Earth having defeated Mordor.”
Actually, here is the idea sir. I went all-in for you jackasses last election cycle. Instead of putting a little more money in my kids’ 529 plan, I donated as much as I could to GOP candidates. I rallied my family and friends across the country, wrote letters to the editor, and talked to total strangers. I voted early, and visited polling sites to encourage GOP workers after that.
Why did I do all that? Because a 529 plan is worth very little if Democrats spend us into oblivion. My only purpose was to do what I could to stave off Uncle Sam going into Chapter 11. And for that I need to “get my ass in line”, and quit acting like a “hobbit”? Really?
Well let me tell you a few things, pal. First, thanks for throwing the election in 2008 to get us into this mess. I did a better job running my candidacy for class president in 4th grade. Second, and I know this is difficult for you, I understand that we are spending more than we take in. If you were able to actually criticize a Democrat, you might make the point that the blame lies completely with them. George Bush has had nothing to do with budgeting for the last 2 1/2 years.
But the idea is that we trusted you all to stand firm on spending. You should have been ringing the bell loud and clear for months leading up to this crisis. You should demand a simple deal – $1 in debt ceiling increase for every $1 in real spending cuts. Period. You should shut down the Senate until they present and vote on a budget. And if Barack Obama doesn’t want to have this discussion again, he and his buddies in the Senate can propose a budget that requires us to live within our means.
You are a jerk, Senator McCain. There is simply no other way to put it. I am living on an income that is what about what I made in 2004. Fortunately, I saw the hellstorm that was on the way when Democrats took control and eliminated every dime of debt I had – what a concept, huh? It can be done. You and your colleagues are simply pushing the problem down the road, until our children are of age and the pain they will bear will make Greece look like a lemonade stand. And you dare to call us “hobbits” when the only little people are the GOP elected officials who cannot even articulate why spending more than you take in is bad.
The idea was not to posture for some political advantage as you surmise, it was to stand firm on principal. You’ll need us hobbits one day, but don’t expect us to come running when you call next time.
You said it, Jack.
