Double Dipping and the Obesity Crisis

Long, long ago we were always cautioned to not believe anything we read and only half of what we saw. So in the intervening years we walked around blinking and shaking our heads trying to get a clear picture of what was before us and limited our news reading to the gossip columns and the sports arguments. But after years and years of propagandizing, advertising, soliciting and heart-rending testimonials, we came to accept that the US Department of Agriculture, and of course the Department of Health and Human Services, and oh-God-yes the Department of Education, served a vital and crucial role.
However, certain blips on the radar, coupled with the current moaning and wailing about the US Government running out of money, have caused us to ask a question or two. Like, if there is this program then why is there also this program.   In other words, why are parents and guardians not feeding their children with the food stamps they get, but instead sending them or taking them to local schools, in the summertime, to be fed twice a day?  Are they selling the food stamps on the black market and using the money to buy cigarettes and booze?   Or are they urging their children to gorge themselves on the food they buy with their food stamps and taking them to local school or charitable outlets to tank up a couple more times a day, and if so does that explain the supposed obesity crisis rampant throughout the USA?

So now we’re paying for the National School (Breakfast and) Lunch Program, the National Summmer (Breakfast and) Lunch Program, the Food Stamp Program, the AFDC Program, the Earned Income Credit Program, the Back-to-School freebies program, the Head Start breakfast, snack and lunch programs, the SSI for Bi-Polar parents- who- won’t- feed- their- kids program, the mortgage -forgiveness-for-bi-polar-parents who are on SSI and Medicaid- and- won’t- feed-their- kids- but- who- will-waste-gasoline-driving-them-across-town-to-a-school-to-eat-in-the-summer Program.

Just getting started but, how many dips are we up to now?

  1. I think I mentioned this in another post. Can’t remember whose, could have been yours Bob. I worked for Head Start for a summer. Worst job I ever had. I came home every day and bawled. The stress was unbelievable. So much for the Feds and their entitlement programs.

    • Yes, I remember your comment, LIO. Since then I have read reports where the benefits of Head Start largely evaporate by the time kids get to regular school. So we not only have double, triple and quadruple dipping, we have programs layered one upon the other that do not work!

  2. Harvard strikes again. Cut the welfare state, the flow of dollars, then the people will find they have to make choices. Giving them food stamps and dollars, encourages them to go to the fast food restaurants. Why do many welfare recipients walk around with expensive fancy nails? Because they get all this free food and money, so they don’t have to make the hard or wise choices the rest of us do.

(BTW, “Harvard strikes again”) is a live link, scroll mouse over it. It tells the story of a Harvard professor saying parents of obese children should lose custody.)
