They worked their hearts out, with joy

With this somewhat stilted sentence, Michelle Bachmann captured the essence of America. She was speaking of her grandparents at the Redstate Gathering 2010 in Austin.

I am glad to see she has gotten in.

Left, right or across to many have forgotten the key ingredients that made America different from the rest of the world.

A written constitution that was obeyed, mostly, for the first 100 years and generally for the next 50 years.

This dovetails into the rule of law that too many on the right ignore with Drug Wars and Social Security among others items plainly in violation of the US Constitution but which “conservatives” still support from political expediency and a desire for power. Or perhaps these things are covered by the good and welfare clause. Gingrich was right about one thing recently, social engineering from the right isn’t prettier than what comes from the left. He does speak well, sometimes.

A Judeo-Christian ethic. Not just as a work ethic but as a life ethic. Like Romney’s abortion flip-flops and Gingrich’s adulteries. I am only pointing out “conservatives” because of course the left has no morals, they revel in that, but we pretend to be different. How these men can even be in the running is astounding. When Hamilton’s affair came to light it was understood that was the end of his presidential aspirations. Even though it has been broadly speculated from ratification on that the 14-years-a-citizen provision was explicitly designed to open the path for his candidacy. (What would Arnold have given for that kind of exemption? A maid?)

LIMITED government. Stay out of the way. Romney likes to say state based ObamaCare is OK and maybe from a legal standpoint the MA constitution allows such. Only a statist would know. Nobody else would have asked the question. Pawlenty speaks of ObamneyCare, ha ha!!! As governor, Pawlenty supported School-to-Work programs which are designed to train EMPLOYEES for the WORKPLACE instead of creating objective, critical thinking, people capable of STARTING A BUSINESS AND CREATING A WORKPLACE and the jobs that come with it. He sees the state as holding the solutions as well. Pawlenty doesn’t think the state should control your healthcare instead he believes the state should be the primary influencer of what your children grow up to know and think about the world.

They worked their hearts out, with joy.

Far too many on the right utterly fail to grasp the importance of the character possessed by people who would and did truly consider the opportunity to work 14 and 16 hour days in the heat of summer and the bitter winters a reason for joy. A reason millions emigrated from Europe and Asia to work harder every day than most of us have worked ANY day. Even the smallest dirt farmer able to grasp the endgame of their labors, a place of their own, a field that when plowed and sowed and harvested and when that harvest sold building an inheritance for their children and grand-children. The legacy we pass down, instead of providing a shoulder-to-stand-on is a hole for our posterity to stand in and we whine. And we excuse the politicians who speak of a balanced budget in 20 YEARS.

No we don’t excuse them, we call them visionary.

We come from farmers and ranchers and factory workers from the north AND from the south, most who never owned a slave, but, they worked as hard or harder than any slave ever did. (And rightfully so, they were working for themselves and their children.) And yes others owned slaves and some were free blacks who worked twice as hard as the slaves next to them, first to buy their own freedom and then to purchase family members.

And black or white, slave or free they toiled and built the greatest, richest nation the world has ever known. Not only have we squandered that wealth, we have stolen the wealth of our children and our grandchildren and even our great-grandchildren. And a “conservative” visionary says we should steal the wealth of our great-great-grandchildren.

We’ve squandered the wealth they worked for.

We’ve misspent the freedom they died for.

We’ve destroyed the legacy of faith they bequeathed us.

And they worked their hearts out with joy.

  1. On your last little bit there Rogue, uh…yes. Somedays its very hard not to reach for the switch and start applying it ferociously to our own backs. But at the same time knowing that, just as they did it all with joy, they forgive us now for our failings.
