Netanyahu: “It’s not going to happen.”

It was telegraphed a couple of days in advance, so Netanyahu surely expected it. Still, it must have come as a severe shock to Netanyahu, his government, and every Israeli when Obama explained his requirements for a peace settlement based on the pre-1967 lines — which would spell doom for the state of Israel.

Witness now the  7 minutes of obvious high tension between Netanyahu and Obama:

The idea of going back to the pre-1967 lines is much worse than a ‘non-starter’ for Israel, and Obama knows it. He knew it before he proposed it.  The real question becomes, is Obama creating a bargaining position he can give back, or is he serious about destroying the Jewish state?  Many of us who never trusted Obama would guess the latter.

Forget Gaza, Israel has already ceded Gaza to the Palestinians.  The Golan might be negotiable with modern weapons – Syrian artillery on the Golan Heights,  shooting down into the Israeli valleys can be countered much more easily than they could in 1967.

But look at the map (click to enlarge) of the West Bank (of the Jordan River) below and you see that Netanyahu was not exaggerating when he stated that ceding the 1967 lines would leave part of Israel narrower than the DC beltway.  That part just to the left of the words ‘West Bank’.  If the West Bank were ceded to the Palestinian state, Jerusalem would disappear in a heartbeat for the Israelis.  The rest of the country would follow months later.

The entire Middle East would explode into a ghastly, desperate struggle. The Israelis will not go quietly.

Back to the pre-1967 lines? Hardly. (click to enlarge)

There is rich historical precedent for keeping territory won in wars, especially if the territory won is deemed essential to the victor’s security. The entire United States continent for instance. We were fighting the French for American soil before our revolution began. Then we won 13 colonies from the British crown. There were desultory battles with Spain to win Florida. Then we won significant parts of New Mexico and Arizona from Mexico in battle. Let’s not even get in to how war changed the map of Europe!

The Palestinians’ recent alliance with Hamas only magnifies the urgency in the Palstinian mind to hasten the total destruction of Israel.

Nobody in the West (at least in liberal circles) seems to realize that the Palestinians really mean it when they talk about the destruction of Israel. Their actions have done nothing but underscore this aspiration for thousands of years, but especially in the last 60 years through many serial Intifadas.

All of us here at Unified Patriots deplore and condemn in the strongest terms policies that threaten the existence of Israel. Obama also heard that today from several Jewish organizations and large donors.

Politicians who fail to pursue vigorous pro-Israel policies will be meeting our wrath at the polls.

  1. Let’s put this in terms the Beltway crowd can understand. Israel is nine miles wide at the narrowest part of the 1967 boundaries. That means you can party hearty on M Street at Georgetown, unless rockets from Rockville MD blow you to smithereens.

    • A nice illustration street! I was thinking Arlington, the big hill that used to belong to Robert E. Lee, where the Old Soldier’s Home is. A nice overwatch position and the perfect place for artillery.

Terrain is one of the primary planning criteria, new weapons or old. The Air Force has been preaching for years that they can win wars but no matter what they do it still requires an Infantryman to put boots on the ground. High ground is as militarily important now as it was 10,000 years ago.
