Dueling senate bills on oil, both cow dung

Update 5/18/11.
McConnell’s bill is easily defeated. No surprise.

We have:

Sen. Robert Menedez’s bill (D-NJ)

S.258 — Close Big Oil Tax Loopholes Act

I like this part the best:

SEC. 5896. IMPOSITION OF TAX.`(a) In General- In addition to any other tax imposed under this title, there is hereby imposed a tax equal to 13 percent [emphasis mine] of the removal price of any taxable crude oil or natural gas removed from the premises during any taxable period.

Which is a piece of cow dung.

Then we have McConnell’s bill:

S.953 — Offshore Production and Safety Act of 2011

I like this part the best:

(1) IN GENERAL- The Secretary of Energy,[Steven Chu, bad news, my insertion] acting through the Office of Science of the Department of Energy, shall use available funds in the Ultra-Deepwater and Unconventional Natural Gas and Other Petroleum Research Fund established under section 999H of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (42 U.S.C. 16378), and such other funds as are necessary, to conduct a study, in collaboration with the Office of Fossil Energy of the Department, on means of improving prevention methodologies and technological responses to oil spills and mitigating the effects of oil spills on natural habitat.

(2) TASK FORCE- As part of the study required under this subsection, the Secretary shall convene a task force composed of representatives of the private sector, institutions of higher education, and the National Academy of Sciences–

Which is also a piece of cow dung.

Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) explains both better than I can. After all, he lives down there in the affected area and is hearing loud noises from his constituents:

Dang people. Are we gonna have to drill ourselves?

These people want to put us back in caves with no candles which will be declared a “fossil fuel” and out of bounds.

Candles are evil, they have to be made from animal fat or from the slave labor of such wondrous creatures as bees. And that doesn’t even touch on the terrible heat and carbon released into the atmosphere by the filthy Gaia destroying things. I’m sure candles will soon go the route of the good old fashioned light bulb and be outlawed.

Wasn’t it especially ballsy of Senator Bitch McConnell to demand a study to fix the shut down of the oil industry by Obama’s Czars and Cabinet Ministers. Wow, he was feeling frisky!
