Obama just gave small app developers and offshore cell phone sellers a huge boon.
At a press conference today in New York City, mayor Bloomberg, Â FEMA, and the FCC told reporters that the system, called PLAN (Personal Localized Alert Network) would require new chips in your cell phone and software on board to support the system. Â It’ll be in use in NYC and Washington DC this year, and the rest of the country next year; probably prior to November.
Somehow, a system called PLAN dedicated to government instant texting of citizens suggests just the opposite. Â A government that planned wisely would probably be able to keep instant texts to citizens to a bare minimum. Â But we all know planning is not government’s strong suit.
But I digress.
The system will allow you to opt-out of all messages… except those from the President.
I can just see today’s text from our
Comforter-in-Chief SEAL-Commander-in-Chief: “I flew to Texas today to collect my early TX campaign contributions. Â Saw a flooded Mississippi River and wildfires in TX; too bad for them. Â VOTE FOR ME!”
I predict at least two things: Â sales of ‘World’ phones from foreign vendors will rise perceptibly. Â Downloads of apps to defeat the G-chip will be very, very popular (perhaps you’ll be able to download them from GOP.org). Â They’ll probably have to pass a law making a G-chip-defeating app illegal to install on your phone. Â A third thing: Visitors who come here from overseas will be able to bring a few extra cell phones for casual sale and pay for their trip!
But one thing bothers me. Â I have already opted-in to my community’s nixle network where my city and sheriff can text me with public safety news. Â Obama and FEMA can already text me anytime they wish, if my city police or sheriff agree that a threat exists.
So what else will that new G-chip on my phone do?
