40 Days for Life is a 40 day prayer campaign that has three main tenets: prayer and fasting, community outreach, and a prayerful, peaceful vigil on the sidewalks outside abortion clinics. The latest campaign kicked off on Ash Wednesday and over 250 babies have been spared from abortion!

While I strongly advocate exhausting all legislative options when it comes to ending abortion, such as personhood amendments and defunding Planned Parenthood, I believe that abortion will end through the grass root efforts of each citizen, united and active, in proclaiming that every child has dignity endowed by His Creator and an unalienable right to life.

We must take take an active role in ending abortion. Quiet, contemplative prayer is an important component to be sure but God wants us to ACT! In today’s daily reading at Mass, Jesus told the paralytic to “Rise, take up your mat, and walk!” He didn’t say pray harder to be healed or let me carry you to the water he said “RISE!”

We must take to the streets just as they did during the civil rights movement. As the indefatigable Fr. Frank Pavone has said:

The Civil Rights movement and the Pro-Life movement have the same heart and soul: a longing for equal justice for everyone, based on the inherent dignity of every human life. That’s why, when Dr. Alveda King first walked with me at the annual March for Life and I asked her, “Does this remind you of the marches in the civil rights movement?” she declared, “Fr. Frank, this is the civil rights movement!” Both movements are movements of freedom.

So, let us begin.
