A Refutation of Charles Darwin and Planned Parenthood, 1867

The thought came over me this morning that as we beat back the stupidity of the Left…yes, stupidity…we must go back as many as 50 years, maybe more, and re-visit, re-analyze, re-discuss, then re-peal not just the laws that stupidity has brought forth, but the entire framework of discussion upon which that stupidity is based.

Why I was struck by this is that I was browsing through a book from 1964, pre-Roe v Wade, about birth control. Title: Population, Evolution and Birth Control, edited by Garret Hardin. (You can buy this book for under $5 at Amazon.com.)  It had articles from Darwin, Malthus, Margaret Sanger, Martin Luther, Tertullian…the entire gamut of religious, scientific, pseudo-scientific arguments both pro-and-con.

What an interesting connection, which today no one really pauses to consider, Charles Darwin and Abortion? Charles Darwin and Planned Parenthood?

I found it interesting, as I found interesting in the popular D’Sousa-Hitchens debates on Creation, that Science can never really refute philosophy. It must either embrace it, or be less than valid. To be sure, there is poor philosophy, and we see it all too often in the political theater, even from our own side. But philosophy, well targeted, always delivers a knock-out blow…

…unless of course the audience is stupid.

And this is what the Pop Science world seems to need to create. My son graduated in 1992 with a BS degree in Zoology. There Darwin was taught as fact, in fact, as the only fact, when in fact, it is merely a theory.

Did you know that? Well, the stupid don’t.

Want to know what well-targeted philosophy is? I only quote here today a short note by an anonymous critic, named Athenaeum, in 1867, (not to be confused with Darwin apologist Thomas Huxley):

In the Theory, with which we have to deal, Absolute Ignorance is the artificer; so that we may enunciate as the fundamental principle of the whole system that,

IN ORDER TO MAKE A PERFECT AND BEAUTIFUL MACHINE  IT IS NOT REQUISITE TO KNOW HOW TO MAKE IT.

The proposition will be found to express the essential purport of the Theory, and to express in a few words all of Mr Darwin’s meaning, who, by a strange inversion of reasoning. seems to think Absolute Ignorance fully qualified to take the place of Absolute Wisdom in all the achievements of creative skill.

Remember only this, it is the “Inversion of Reason” that is our enemy, for it pervades all that we fight.
