Cornell McClellan, successful 50-ish fitness guru who owns his own gym in Chicago. He also is assigned the task of keeping Resident Obama in tip-top shape. He also trains Whitehouse staff and members of the first family, some of whom are more willing than others.
“It was an easy sell for me, because I thought of it as kind of a duty, to serve the president.” says Mr. McClellan the first-trainer. Proudly he states that he has overseen both Obamasâ€™ exercise programs for more than a decade, although it’s hard to ascertain any improvement in that time.
Mr. McClellan works out with the first couple, often in the early morning, at the gym located inside the White House. Mr. McClellan’s only complaint is you can smell breakfast being prepared in the kitchen, from the gym. Mr. and Mrs. Obama both try to exercise for at least an hour every day but Mr. McClellan says, “Once the smell of breakfast hits the gym and Michelle gets a whiff, all bets are off”
His charges can be divided into two camps, the enthusiastic and the grudging. White House staff members say the president is a star student. The first lady, not so much. Although she is spearheading an intensive campaign to fight childhood obesity and her staff would have you believe she’s eager and dedicated by pointing out her famously toned arms…..2600 calorie steak dinners, extra scoops of ice cream after and the M&M’s found throughout the West Wing tell a different story.
Frequent trips to 5-star restaurants for Lobster don’t help Mr. McClellan’s fitness plan either.
