Happy Hour at the NCO Club

Take a seat at the bar and order something. It's still early.

We here at Unified Patriots don’t see ourselves as officers, but as regular folk who work for a living. So when we fraternize we do it in a place that isn’t so hoity toity that you need to wash your face or clean your nails before pushing the door open and crossing the threshold.

Step up to the bar, pilgrims, get yourself a drink, and introduce yourself to the rest of the gang.

Today’s suggested ice-breaker is: Are you a dog person or a cat person? Why?

The comments are open. Have at it!

    Both.
Oh I know ‘A dog is a mans’ best friend’, but they are still lousey at catching mice. 😉

  2. beaglescout March 3rd, 2011 at 5:10 pm

I’m neither a cat or dog person, because I have young kids. They take all the time and energy I would spend on pets. Once they grow up I’ll probably get a cat. Low maintenance.

Who else caught this article about Pope Benedict making a statement (exactly how official this statement is I do not know) that Jews bear no collective responsibility for the death of Christ? That responsibility was borne those who actually acted to bring about the deaths, and since none of them are alive now there is no guilt attaching to other Jews (or Romans) who came later.

  3. vassarB March 3rd, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Dogs make me cry, had three that made it to 15. cats make me sneeze.

    • beaglescout March 3rd, 2011 at 5:36 pm

Vassar, with three dogs making it to 15, you sound like a dog person. Funny, that’s always what I thought you would be.

  4. Arwen March 3rd, 2011 at 5:51 pm

Howdy to all, pass the beer pitcher, please. Dogs & cats – love both, especially labs, but I have 4 rescue cats at present. Cats are lower maintenance, beaglescout. 🙂

and Cats keep your house Critter free

  5. vassarB March 3rd, 2011 at 5:58 pm

My dad shot our last one, he was crippled and blind, but he refused to simply dispose of him with the vet. My dad was real proper about that. Drove him to high country in AZ, and if I know him, talked to him for an hour, explaining…you know what I mean…and telling him all about the great years they’d had together…then spending an hour burying him in that hard dirt they have. He admired that dog more than most people. Best friend he ever had in his later life, I’m sure. For 7-8 years of my life, mine too. A wire-haired terrier named Spook. Dad just called him “Buddy”.

But I’m under orders by the fair sergeant at arms at my house to explain that why cats make me sneeze is that we have four at our house…and Gah, do I love them.

It’s either that or cold cuts tonight.

I do like them, really, even considering the collateral damage.

Currently, 4 dogs and 1 cat. My little Fox Terrier, Bear, turned 15 on Oct. 7 last year. He still runs, yes I said runs, with the younger ones on walks for at least a little bit. Vassar, I’m not surprised that you got 3 to 15, with the love and dignity you give to everyone and everything. My cat, that showed up at my house, makes me feel like I have at least a pound of hair in my nose. She adores my husband, and beaglescout, if you think they are low maintenance, wait. They want to be left alone, and they love independence, until you ignore them, then all bets are off. BTW, I had a 17 hand thoroughbred live to 18.

  7. redneck hippie March 3rd, 2011 at 6:07 pm

I’ve had both. Here’s the story of “Kitty.” When she was a later-found-out-to-be-pregnant stray, we told my daughter to go in the house and get the cat something to eat. So she did, but she came back out with a banana. Then there’s Malcolm, one of my daughter’s 2 present dogs. Malcolm is just like a tall, skinny cat–a bird dog they found at the shelter who went by the name of Mr. Brown. They theorize the original owners weren’t too good because they gave him up when he was no longer young but in good health. When he gets excited (like the postman makes a weird move) he shakes like a leaf. Most lovable dog I’ve ever met.

Hey, I recognize that bar in the picture. Isn’t that where ErickBrockway and Nessa were hanging out while awaiting the launch of this site. I believe the tatoo section is in the back.

  9. erickbrockway March 3rd, 2011 at 6:10 pm

Cats, don’t hafta teach them where to poop, just stick ’em in sand. I’m allergic to ’em too, but WTH.

Believe it, our last cat was named BooBoo Kitty (no relation), and we had him for over ten years.

  10. RottDawg March 3rd, 2011 at 6:15 pm

Well, I have always been a dawg person… til I had to put down my Rottie… as cold as it may sound, and I am sure it does because I’ve been told… lossing that dog was harder on my than loosing my dad this past September. Norm (my Rott) died 12 years ago and I switched to McCaws… they live to be 60-80years old and I figure this way I don’t have to deal with another pet dying on me.

    • eburke March 3rd, 2011 at 6:23 pm

So…is that really a picture of you, RottDawg?

      • RottDawg March 3rd, 2011 at 6:27 pm

No eburke, I wouldn’t want to degrade this nice site that’s been built for the all of us.

        • eburke March 3rd, 2011 at 7:23 pm

          LOL!

If it *was* a recent pic, I was going to compliment you on how much better looking you’ve gotten.

    • redneck hippie March 3rd, 2011 at 6:25 pm

Sure takes a while to get over. When our kitty’s organs were failing, the vet injected her with some fluids so we could have her at home a little longer and adjust to things, make sure when we were ready to let her go. Vet was wonderful – the three of us were there, petting and crying, holding her till the end. I don’t have a pet anymore. I had let my daughter take kitty with her when she left home (for the third time) so she wouldn’t be so lonely in her little apartment. Now that daughter has 3 cats, Mommy-cat, Ashes, and Knucklehead.

      • RottDawg March 3rd, 2011 at 6:35 pm

I have to confess that I dislike cats… except for the one that is sitting on my lap right now. A friend of mine had three and this one here wouldn’t leave me alone, every time I went over to her house Calie (yeah she’s a calico) had to be on my chest, head nuzzled up under my chin and if anyone tried to remove her, they got swatted at or bit. When she moved they had a two pet limit and asked if I would take her. She’s 11 now, I got her when she was 7… I’m hoping I have another 9-10 years as she is extremely fit and the vet always tells me how big of a favor I am doing her by not overfeeding her… fingers-crossed though, cuz this one is gonna hurt too. 🙁

        • redneck hippie March 3rd, 2011 at 6:44 pm

It’s kinda like with humans. Can’t say I have liked all the ones that have come my way, either.

  11. Ron Robinson March 3rd, 2011 at 6:21 pm

    Dawg. Not ‘splainin’.

  12. eburke March 3rd, 2011 at 6:22 pm

Definitely a dog dude. Never had much hankerin’ for the aloofness of cats. Remind me to much of high-maintenance women.

    /ducks

    • SEC March 3rd, 2011 at 6:38 pm

eburke- Apparently your better half doesn’t read here huh? LOL

      • eburke March 3rd, 2011 at 7:22 pm

        LOL!

Well…she doesn’t (at least not yet 🙂 But my out is that she’s not a very high-maintenance woman 🙂

But she *is* a very patient and tolerant one. It’s how I’ve survived this long.

  13. pilgrim March 3rd, 2011 at 6:29 pm

Pilgrim is here to get a drink. Does this joint have Kraken?

    • SEC March 3rd, 2011 at 6:41 pm

No Kraken here pilgrim, but they do serve Bushmills.

    • speciallist March 3rd, 2011 at 10:11 pm

LMAO….did he say the world is secular? 🙂

      • SEC March 3rd, 2011 at 10:18 pm

I don’t think so specialist, but there was a circular intonation to the comment. LOL.

  14. YLovell March 3rd, 2011 at 7:05 pm

Currently I have 2 cats. Both “males”. My fat boy Roger, Also known as Sumo or Catdog, just showed up on my doorstep one day and wouldn’t take no for an answer. Calvin is my brother’s cat, who he brought along for the ride after he lost his house during the recent troubles. Calvin also just showed up at my brother’s jobsite one day and …..

We were worried how they would get along at first and I personally saw a few examples of the expression “Fur will fly” in action. Luckily, they have settled down and agreed to just shoot daggers at one another from across a distance.

I haven’t had a dog since my Old English/fence jumper mix Winnie passed away at 13 years old back in 2005 and her 2 partners in crime Bentley aka Queen Nepherkitty 14 yrs, and Rudy 12 the minature poodle all passed within a few months of one another. Broke my heart and I can still get a burning sensation in my eyes just remembering the laughter they brought to us.

Obviously we could all sit around and tell crazy pet stories for hours. Thanks for the opportunity to share.

  15. YLovell March 3rd, 2011 at 7:07 pm

PS, this bar has a lot of ambiance. I’ll be back cause you know I love me some Bushmills too!

    • eburke March 3rd, 2011 at 7:25 pm

Bushmills is some smoooooooth stuff ain’t he…I mean it.

      • YLovell March 3rd, 2011 at 7:36 pm

Yes, smoooooth. You and the rest of the gang are quite palatable as well. I believe a 5 star rating from Zagat’s is coming soon!

  16. Stix March 3rd, 2011 at 7:09 pm

I pretty much love all animals and have had many different critters throughout my live. We even had pet snakes we caight and some pet snapping turtles.

And a song for the bar

    • Stix March 3rd, 2011 at 7:10 pm

OK how do we embed videos:

      • YLovell March 3rd, 2011 at 7:33 pm

LOL, Good one Stix. Of course now I’m going to be up all night sampling all the other old Bluesmen and women that are on the right side of the youtube page, which will lead to more youtube pages and on and on and on.

Please, Somebody, in the name of not getting off track, we need to know how to embed so those of us with short attention spans don’t go off on a tangent after viewing the suggested link.

      • erickbrockway March 3rd, 2011 at 8:09 pm

        Use “Old embed code”

        • Stix March 3rd, 2011 at 8:30 pm

actually I think you just need the url. the embed code was in the first comment

  17. Queen Hotchibobo March 3rd, 2011 at 8:45 pm

I like cats *and* dogs. Dogs keep my feet warm when I want them to, tell me when company’s coming and wag their tails when they see me.

Cat’s eat mice and rumble a happy rumble when I hold or rub them them.

All of these things make me happy.

And a special thank you to all my friends at UP. You guys make me happy too!!

    Army v Navy

    • nessa March 4th, 2011 at 10:53 am

Hey! I’ve been to that Club! The drinks are good, if you don’t mind chewing the mud particles after you swallow.

  20. streetwise March 3rd, 2011 at 10:47 pm

Oh, and I like dogs, but am definitely a cat person. Cats are not aloof They just have lives!

My cats have been by my side blog after blog, radio show after radio show. But what are they thinking? 🙂

  21. mbecker908 March 3rd, 2011 at 11:09 pm

We are dog folk. Served Franz Prince of Dogness for 17 wonderful years and for the first ten we had the honor to serve Hanz Brother of The Prince of Dogness.

It’s been 2 1/2 months since Franz went to the Bone Fight in the Sky with Hanz and Mrs908 still miss him every day.

    Hey guys,

I need a tutorial on how to post stories over here….

  24. A.C. Swiger-AceInTX March 4th, 2011 at 7:38 am

By the way, I suggest making “The NCO club a place to come in and post random thoughts. Put a link to the thread in the menu bar and just leave the thread open and running

    Thoughts?

    • JadedByPolitics March 4th, 2011 at 7:56 am

I like it, good idea! btw there is a way to get an icon picture through gravitar….go sign up, so you don’t have a flipped G with your name, oh, WELCOME!

      • A.C. Swiger-AceInTX March 4th, 2011 at 8:21 am

        Hey Little Sister!

Send me an email and tell the rest of the gang to as well. I need to rebuild my mailing list….

Computer crashed and I lost all emails and addresses…Bumber

Are you one of the casualties?

Have you all heard from Scope? I think the purge is ungoing and people are slowly being dragged off into the night without fanfare and I think she’s one.

        • SEC March 4th, 2011 at 9:15 am

Hi Ace- Good to see you. This place is awesome isn’t it? I agree about the open thread idea. (minpin@turbousa.com) please shoot me an email.

  25. A.C. Swiger-AceInTX March 4th, 2011 at 7:41 am

Make it a permanent open thread if you will

  26. nessa March 4th, 2011 at 10:59 am

Mighty fine NCO Club you set up here Beaglescout!

I can’t rightly pick one or the other. If I’m out shopping for a new pet its a dog, but there are two cats in the house too. Got a German Shepard, she’s a sweetheart but spoiled. She won’t eat biscuits, she figured out that if she passes on the biscuit I will feel guilty and share some of my chicken.

  27. Kimberly_Schwartz March 4th, 2011 at 6:56 pm

I like this place; glad to have found my way here and to see some familiar faces. Thanks, VB, for giving me directions. Just hoping I don’t make a total fool of myself right out of the gate trying to imbed this image….

Dogs or cats? BOTH, but hold the reptiles, rodents, and insects, please. I like most dogs and most cats better than I like most people. Dogs are loyal and remind you constantly that you’re important to somebody. Cats remind you constantly that you aren’t as important as you might believe. We just had to say goodbye to my husband’s retired police dog this week. RIP Riggs. We miss you, big guy.

    • Kimberly_Schwartz March 4th, 2011 at 7:13 pm

Yep, made a fool of myself. But my dogs still love me. 🙂

  28. mriggio March 5th, 2011 at 9:47 am

This NCO Club looks vaguely familiar. I was wondering where in heck everyone went; sorry I’m late to the party, but mighty glad to have caught up with y’all.

I don’t much care for that-there Kraken stuff Barkeep, but I’ll take a Captain Morgan & Coke, since it’s still early and all.

Three cats: Boo the Eldest, picked up in a parking lot just weaned and abandoned 15 years ago; Frankie Blue-Eyes and sister Gabbie, fetched from the farm 4 years ago, Boo hates them both.
One dog, Shadow, a lab-collie mix, on (long-term) loan from step-son #2, since Army barracks and college apartments won’t allow him; Shadow is dumber than a box-of-rocks but loves everyone equally. He’s a poor guard dog, would kiss an intruder to death. They’re all my favorites…

Glad to be here, and can I get a refill? Cheers!
