Electability! or How I Learned To Under-Estimate Independents and Came To Love the Bomb

Idiot.

It’s warming up already. Conservatives across the Country are picking their candidates from the ranks of the possible but still undeclared. I jumped on the Herman Cain Bandwagon with a quickness. In the interest of full disclosure I was a Fredhead last time, I’m a sucker for the “unelectable”.

I’ve already been told, several times, “he’s unelectable”. Wow, who died and made you the arbiter of American voting values?

This statement is almost invariably followed by, “The independents will decide the next election, we need to attract the independents.” Oh, now I understand, Independents are a separate species, easily attracted to the right bait, like a mouse to cheese in the trap. So we need to throw out some cheese, something the strange, sub-species of humans, the independents will run slavering towards. Something like JohnnyMac. That’s the ticket. Someone who refuses to take a stance on anything, someone who is equally as shallow as the Independents are imagined to be by the Establishment Republicans.

Why are Independents so shallow? Why do they suddenly flock to a candidate who holds up a Global Warming sign and makes sideways suggestions that he will back the destruction of our economy to further manbearpig’s goals?

Well the answer is that they don’t. I know a good many Independents, they do not share our relish for political dialogue and banter but they’re not shallow. Or stupid. My wife is an avowed Independent, if you leave out marrying me her list of stupid acts is empty.  Some of the editors of this very website are avowed independents. You can place your own scale of stupidity next to their names, based on their association with us.

Why won’t an Independent be drawn to the same things a Conservative is? Merely because they tire of the lies that politicians of both parties tell routinely, they are susceptible to only more lies? Efforts to draw Independents via “the lie” have been proven to work no better than Johnny Mac’s entire campaign. How about taking a whole new tack with them?

Let’s try communicating with Independents as if they were regular American Citizens, regular citizens who could appreciate someone who tells it like it is. Someone who doesn’t lie, someone who doesn’t weasel when he’s asked hard questions. How about enticing Independents with the same flavor bait we use for fellow Conservatives? Truth, honesty, values. Why won’t that work?

  1. #RINO McCain and Liberal Dem/Independent Lieberman were in Tahrir Square today.

“Speaking with the official Middle East News Agency (MENA), Senator John McCain explained that he and Senator Joseph Lieberman had come on a solidarity visit. He noted the Egyptian people had fought hard for their freedom, and said the U.S. would do its best to assist them in their quest. But the two, escorted by American Ambassador to Egypt Margaret Scobey, added that ultimately, the future lies in the hands of the Egyptian people.”

    Check it out.

  2. You know, in my case i was a fairly late bloomer, politically. Started out as quasi-liberal. Married & raised kids, became an independent and then calcified into what I am today. For me, a lot of things started to come together with the advent of talk radio, in the 80s. And that meant one guy, Rush Limbaugh. But to get here I needed to bridge the gap between my moral values and the world of politics. It works different ways for different folks. We just need a whole lot of hooks with different flavors of bait on them.

  3. Unfortunately, most Independents that I know have never heard of Herman Cain. He hasn’t busted through that Tea Party bubble yet. Whenever I make someone sit and watch him, they turn around and say “Wow, I like him!”

I made a black self-avowed liberal-loving community organizing type watch his speech the other day. I told her that he had no party affiliation before she watched. She said, “He makes Obama look like a teenager, he’s great.” Most are clueless with everything going on with the present regime but most share the same vision of America as founded. They just seem to have some sort of blind loyalty. It’s this blind loyalty that needs to be tackled…fast.
