Karen Handel won yesterday’s GA-06 Special Election. A few brief thoughts are to be noted; they are a follow-up to Vassar Bushmills’ analysis in his, “How Long Can Karen Handel Hold her Seat After Winning GA-06?”
Post election, I would like to add some additional thoughts. Karen Handel did win yesterday; here are some pertinent numbers, (final tally may have slight variance as numbers are rechecked) but for now: “Georgia 6th went 52.5% Handel, 47.5% Ossoff, i.e. Handel won by 2.5% more than President Trump won the District in November.”
My take, which reinforces Mr. Bushmills’ earlier analysis:
This increase in percentage of her win in a Special Election vs Trump’s performance in the District in November is actually more significant than many people may realize. Special election turnouts are often well below the General Election numbers; it’s obvious the GOP (Establishment AND Trump supporters) turned out for this election. This bodes well for 2018 and 2020. We aren’t going anywhere, and Donald Trump is gaining.
One significant caveat to this: if Handel, who did the right thing, thanking President Trump, (his family lent their names, too, on Social Media several times in recent days) helps get his agenda going, she’ll be reelected in 2018. If she goes to DC and doesn’t “help” – they will primary her in this heavily Republican District. I say this because it’s clear the people are not apathetic or passive about these elections, (which typically is the case) instead, they’re paying close attention.
One other point to make, and we may/will be seeing more of this type of candidate in the future: “Carpetbaggers.” It’s important to refresh our memories on the source and meaning of the term which is quite applicable to today’s politics. Karen Handel’s opponent was a carpetbagger, originally from New York and California. He “lived” in the District next door to the 6th, and couldn’t even cast a vote for himself in the election. (Neither did he live 3 blocks away, but 3 miles away.) People will be talking for days about the millions of dollars poured into his campaign from Hollywood…
1) a Northerner in the South after the American Civil War usually seeking private gain.
2) outsider; especially : a nonresident or new resident who seeks private gain from an area often by meddling in its business or politics
A note about that term carpetbagging…
Long before nice leather luggage existed [from Samsonite (Samson Company started by Jesse Shwayder, Denver, Colorado in 1910, became Samonsite in 1941] (my old stomping grounds) but now, like so many companies, has gone the way of becoming an international corporation with foreign CEOs; people traveled very simply with a carpet bag, nice strong handle attached. Held all their worldly possessions – one change of clothes, maybe two…
Further history to note: these Northerners were despised, rightfully so, by the Southerners, because the scam and theft of what was left of the South was orchestrated by these “outsiders” under the Reconstruction Era post Civil War. It’s also why the South became ‘Democrat’ for the next 100 years – the Northerners were Republicans. So carpetbagging is still a dirty word, only now we’re getting these characters from the elitist North and the Western Hollywood elitists.
The South today is considered “Red” and Republican, and that’s simply because it’s practically the last major populated regional area of the country where traditional values, religious faith practices, and general pro-American patriotism continues to hold sway. The votes of Southern States still counts. It’s also why Donald Trump was not seen as a carpetbagger…he spoke and desired the same goals and traditional beliefs of this part of the country.
Karen Handel, who was an “Establishment” type candidate does have to be careful when she goes to Washington. If the GOP doesn’t get its act together and do what the people elected Trump to accomplish, she won’t be the only person facing a primary challenger in 2018. This is also an alert for any other Republican incumbent up for reelection in 2018. They may have the Republican establishment vote, but the Trump voters are not that old faithful reliable base vote, and they’ll vote accordingly by throwing the bums out.
Congratulations, Karen Handel. Go to DC, but be on the people’s side, and become a voice for change – Drain the Swamp.
